While many of us did visit UoM during the Open Days this week, we are still trying to find out what to do next! This afternoon, the University closed its auditorium doors one last time to prospective students at 3 30 p.m. With lecturers from all Faculties and Departments, we cannot say that help/counselling was lacking but still... is it really worth it ? Having personally talked to many of the lecturers, I have to admit, my idea of UoM changed! They seem to be very open to conversation, friendly, and rapidly involved with prospective students - yet, this might have been quite an obligation to be 'inviting' for the Open Days - meant to arouse interest in student! But the fact that some were quite detached proves that those seemingly involved in specific student-cases were genuine. Needless to say that the University isn't only about lecturers! Indeed, the setting is also very important and needs to be considered! I believe the whole University buildings/ground area could have been better designed, yet nothing much can be done about that. Apart from the small size factor, some believe graduating students often meet there to flirt, when they are tuition-free! You should really NEED affection to go to UoM, in the scorching sun, to go flirt! LOL, but that's not our worry! From MBC video footage, I can clearly recall the smallness of the classrooms or should I say "Lecture Theaters". Moving from St Joseph's College (with high ceilings and large classrooms) to UoM's study areas, it seems tight! But again, I believe they are not all that tiny!
On the other hand, what's VERY attractive are the fees! Ranging from Rs 13 900 for a Diploma to Rs14 700 for a Degree and about Rs20000 for Medical Science full-time courses, the University seems to be instantly more interesting! While some speculate about the validity of these Degrees elsewhere in the world, others complacently say that job prospects in Mauritius is exploding , so why think of going abroad? Well, it has to be mentioned that if you choose to do an LLB in UoM and decide to pursue a Masters in UK, for example, then you will have to spend 6-12 months to convert your Mauritian LLB into a UK LLB through a GDL/CPE (Graduate Diploma in Law) - sounds a little weird right ? Does it mean that Degree is not recognized in the UK ? Or does this conversion proces apply due to the fact that some Core Modules are in French? Another black spot is one I read on UoM Live on Facebook, claiming that there was a case of food poisoning at the End of Year party last year! We'r talking of THE sole University of the island, striving to promote education and elevate students, not render them ill - but let's blame the real culprit - the caterer! Shame on you! Anyway, fact remains that whether you like it or not, UoM is the sole provider of Tertiary Education at, let's face it, very affordable rates and we can only bow in front of its noble purpose... Well, I leave you on this note. I hope you have made up your minds because I haven't yet and the application process starts tomorrow! Good luck former HSC students - the world is waiting for you... P.S. Let me know what you think about UoM by leaving comments! Here is a useful link to UoM. Sine Cera
