This Monday, the quiet lives of Canadians were shaken up by the disqualification of bombshell Jenna Talackova for not being born female... This very unusual piece of news must have certainly been received with uproar in the LGBT community of Canada and across the world. As to how the beauty pageant admins came to know about this very delicate information is yet to be unveiled but fact remains that Miss Universe Canada contestant Jenna got disqualified - but the beauty queen wants to believe otherwise and here is what she says on her twitter "I’m disqualified, however I’m not giving up. I’m not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination." So, who is right and who is wrong?

The pictures were finally on Facebook and MODE-K did not lose time in trying to get in touch with the Fashion Designer Annabelle Fleury who was glad to open up... It's been nearly 3 weeks since Bank One held it's annual EMMA Awards to celebrate Mauritian women. The event, which was held at the Intercontinental Hotel at Balaclava, witnessed five women on top in different fields and what better way to celebrate women than showcasing designer clothing for women!? Indeed, as you might know, designers Annabelle Fleury, Anu Sumputh and Sweetie Ramlagun all presented their latest collections. So, here we are, with Annabelle Fleury who spared MODE-K a few moments to talk about her latest Ethno-Chic Spring/Summer 2012 Collection... After a very hectic weekend, I think it's now time to set the scores right concerning Retail Pages and Groups on Facebook... Image from tiscomedia.co.za Dear readers, as some of you might have noticed, they has been much controversy about my last Blog post - which had to be deleted due to its containing wrong information about a certain party. Anyway, what's done it done and we will not look back. Truth is, all the weekend brought me much information from all sides concerning Retail Pages/Groups... Many of you have certainly joined X or Y Group which might be selling AVON products, home-made jewellery, customized items, clothes etc. and many of you have certainly noticed how group owners try their maximum to establish a strong bond with their group members -ultimately their clients. Indeed, there are numerous marketing strategies employed by these owners - some prefer bombarding pictures on the group wall; others simply have private conversations with their clients; while some others have much darker strategies : winning clients from where the grass is always greener - other groups! Having recently attended the reception held by the Hon. Minister of Education, I was astounded by the numerous of invitees who went out of bounds in terms on style. The 'casual-smart' dress-code - how to work it like a pro and avoid making a huge fashion faux pas? Open Air Theatre -Pointe Canon, Mahebourg With an open-air theater as venue, daytime as time-frame and summer as season, I thought most would realize that casual-smart would have been the theme, or that the invitees would simply call to confirm the dress-code, but sadly, only few did apparently. With a scorching sun, those who chose to wear their suit must have been seriously drenched in sweat during the 'refreshment time', after the speeches, which was held just behind the building, under a tent which could barely hole 30 guests at one go! So, would you bare sweating or rather look just how you should and be comfy? Do you master the art of dressing appropriately? Well, for those still finding your way through the styling avenues, them this is for you! MODE-K did miss the opportunity to bring you more 'confessions' from Laureates and today, Estelle C., Science side Laureate from LCQB opens up at the reception held by the Hon. Vasant K. Bunwaree at Mahebourg... Being on the guest list did indeed facilitate my reaching there amongst the brightest minds of tomorrow and first in line was Estelle who not only shone at HSC by ranking 2nd on the Science side making the pride of LCQB but also in her dark blue form-fitting bustier dress with a filmy collar neckline which she bought in Port Louis! Interview: Ranked : 2nd Science Side SC Results, if you don't mind : 6 units Q : So, we are wondering, are you an LCQB 'pure blood' ? A : Haha, nopes. I attended Renganaden Seeneevassen SSS until I moved to LCQB in Form 4. Q: Why did you move from a State School to a confessional one ? With 12 March dawning on paradise island, maybe it's time for some pre-celebration reflection! So, 44 years after our accession to independence from United Kindom, Mauritius can now boast to be a central figure in Africa, but what if this 12 March 1968 never was? What would we be? What if... Well, first of all, if we were still a British colony, we would not be a central figure in Africa, but in the whole world! Yes, with paradise-like beaches on UK soil - remember we are still under British 'ruling'- the Tourism Authority would certainly propell the island as THE place to be on holidays! And forget the 8th position in the Top 10 Honeymoon Destinations, with funding and advertising from mainland UK, Mauritius would have topped the competition! Our economic situation might have not been as secured as it is now, but we would certainly have had more economic freedom thanks to our then partnerships with European economic treaties and such! The Pound Sterling would position us as leaders in the Indian Ocean and BRIC countries in the region, namely China and India, would simple stand no chance on the market! Let's face it, with UK franchises in Mauritius, UK technology and UK expertise, our industries would raffle the Indian Ocean market and stay competitive against all odds! Indeed, quality products would have been available at reasonable prices (rememeber we would receive wages in Pounds) not only to Mauritians but also to a major part of rich Africa and Indonesia! China, with their, let's face it, low-value and/or cheap copycats would simply fail to sell and it's economic status would lag by a whole ocean's market, disbalance it's treaties with India, lose it's Top position in Economic growth, face civil strife eventually out of so much repression, but let's cut the creative crap - back to US! Did you buy your copy of newly released Fashion Magazine LUV XXX, by Mauritian stylist Samuel Yeung? Well, don't worry if you didn't - you did not miss much! _Although I was preparing one such article, much less detailed and lengthy, it has, nonetheless, been such a delight to see that there is at least one other Mauritian who takes time to 'critically analyse' the self-proclaimed Fashion Magazine LUV XXX! [On the left is the cover of the first issue of LUV XXX, where even on a reduced image, you can still see "the thin line of spittle from her front tooth to her lips" as the fashion blogger would say. M&M Promo Picture _From putting forward the grammar mistakes to the outrageous spelling issues regarding stylists and brands, Alexandra, the 19-year-old fashion blogger (and if you're asking yourselves, YEA, my competitor), it seems, took sadistic pleasure in discrediting the whole magazine, along with the its editorial team! Having seen the magazine myself, I totally agree with her views about the awkward layouts, the amateur pictures and weird artistic direction - SERIOUSLY, suit and shoes in bed ? Who can allow such fashion 'faux pas' be published, even less in a Fashion Magazine! Well, I am not going to pursue on analyzing this first issue of the magazine and say things like how GUESS by Marciano became Guess by Maciano but will simply link you to StyleMauritius where I hope you will enjoy reading the lengthy analysis! Did you get a copy of LUV XXX? How did you find it? Let us know what you liked and/or disliked! Sine Cera Did you come across this short article in L'Express, issued this Sunday, which talks about a prospective Shopping Festival in the island? Well, MODE-K has got a juicy idea out of it... _For starters, here is what it read "To give back colors to the local tourist industry. This is the objective of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority [MTPA], which is currently working on a Shopping Festival project. These last weeks, it multiplied meetings with representatives of major commercial centres across the island to encourage them into participating. The latters do not seem, for the time being, very enthusiastic." Well, from the moment I had been through with the title, there was this voice in my head hoping to see the three famous words in the article, sadly they never came. As promised, here is the review of Pinterest, not from a marketing strategist but from a user' s perspective...Pinterest, the Review. After last Thursday's Blog post "Pinterest, the next Facebook?" where much was said about what the new social network, info basically retrieved from the internet, today, let's see Pinterest, from a user's point of view! So, first, there's this major issue about the initial profile creation. If you do not own a Facebook or Twitter account, wait for it, you cannot opt for Pinterest as social network! Yes, during the "Signing up process" you have to go through either of those above mentioned networks to be able to create a profile on Pinterest! So, what happens if, like those so-called Facebook outcasts who proclaim that they aren't on Facebook because there's too little privacy, want to share pictures which aren't theirs but which they want to share anyway!? Well, there's simply no way! Get on Facebook first, lose your privacy and then start pinning! lol But let's be positive about it... Given the VERY negative feedback Bagatelle received from its Facebook 'Fans', can they still aspire to get potential clients by buying 'Likes'? Indeed, from the Facebook status which read "If you could only use one word to describe Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius, which word jumps to mind first? We always appreciate hearing from our Facebook friends, so thanks for helping us understanding our mall even better...."at least half of the 100+ comments received were outbursts at the dreadful smell that Fans linked to the Mall. Here are the juicy bits "Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius =shit smell that sound good" or "LAHAUT BAGATELLE ENBAS LAGRATELLE :p" or even "MALLodorant!" - which totally wins the award for BEST Bad Comment thanks to the nice pun! I hope they still 'appreciate hearing from their Facebook friends" hereon or that they are still "thankful for their help in making them understand what Mall of Mauritius relates to! LOL! |
