With no broadcast of the Oscars ceremony in Mauritius, we are far from being taken up by the Oscar frenzy, the event being one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world... This year's Oscars totaled 39.3 million viewers in the United States alone and given we know it's broadcast in over 100 countries annually, we can only wonder about the number of individuals in front of their TV screen! But what about Mauritius ? Well, sadly, I doubt more than a thousand citizens of paradise island watched it wholly. Indeed, out of the 3 hours and 14 mins the 2012 Oscars lasted, only 2 mins and 20 seconds of raw footage of the ceremony along with flashing images of the Red Carpet Arrivals were broadcast on prime-time TV on the News last Monday! Talk about Mauritius becoming a fashion destination when we all know how the Oscars are now the pinnacle of fashion! Indeed, thousands are plunging on the major coverage of the Oscars ceremony to promote either a brand or a company or specific items or simply, anything that can be worn/placed on a star! Ranging from fashion photographers, who kick and push to be able to get THE best picture of let's say, superstar Jennifer Lopez with hopes for high value shots, to stylists who use all means possible to get THE best dress so that their client falls into the Best Dressed category (a very popular concept during these award ceremonies) so that in turn, some other client would come pay for this stylists' services to be in turn, termed as Best Dressed. An example is that of style guru Rachel Zoe, known as the most powerful stylist in Hollywood, who styled Cameron Diaz for the 2012 Oscars. To be noted that this bustier form-fitting Gucci dress did indeed propel Cameron amongst the Best Dressed this year! But what's happening in Mauritius? Well, nothing much really. Even though we're hearing that Mauritius is going to be a fashion destination soon enough, truth is, nothing much can be seen. Did you hear about Mauriwood? Well, I did, and let's face it, I did laugh at its name! After Hollywood and Bollywood, naming our local Film Industry as Mauriwood is nothing but equating the super-lucrative film industries with our local one! SERIOUSLY, how pretentious is that! Well, not that the idea behind this "Mauriwood" is bad or that I'm not patriotic enough, but when something is cheap, it's just cheap! There's nothing much Mauriwood could else be due to the fact that the island is so small, target market is so restricted and profits, certainly thin! Let's face it, with 1 288 684 inhabitants, with 71.5% of that aged between 15 and 64, out of which only half can be expected to be cinema-goers, this a rough 46 000 figure. Should this be used for profit-calculation, one movie could aim for Rs9.2 million (rs200 ticket basis) gross income, out of which huge sums should be subtracted to pay actors, crew, rent, equipment, post-processing, and the list goes on and on... So far, I've about only 1 movie released by Mauriwood and never actually watched it. What can we hope for ? Well, our only salvation might be in the setting up of private TV broadcasting companies, which would then set up a healthy and productive competition in Mauritius...
