Did you come across this short article in L'Express, issued this Sunday, which talks about a prospective Shopping Festival in the island? Well, MODE-K has got a juicy idea out of it... _For starters, here is what it read "To give back colors to the local tourist industry. This is the objective of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority [MTPA], which is currently working on a Shopping Festival project. These last weeks, it multiplied meetings with representatives of major commercial centres across the island to encourage them into participating. The latters do not seem, for the time being, very enthusiastic." Well, from the moment I had been through with the title, there was this voice in my head hoping to see the three famous words in the article, sadly they never came. _Indeed, for those who guessed right, I'm talking about Fashion's Night Out (FNO)- the biggest Fashion even in the world! It is an "unprecedented global initiative" created in 2009 to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry's economy during the recession. Every year, FNO aims at highlighting and supporting retail with exciting events that include designer appearances, celebrity guests, fashion shows and musical performances. For more information, go to the FNO Facebook Page. With international brands like Hugo Boss, Lacoste and Calvin Klein amongst others, an event like the FNO would seem like a logical option. Although, there has been such an initiative to boost the Mauritian economy in dark times (2010), the "24/7" Project resembles FNO quite a lot. The only difference was that the former was extended on several dates in several towns/regions and included the participation of all retailers regardless of their stocks, whereas the FNO is basically held on one single night, and aims at celebrating fashion through the opening stores until very late. This is why FNO NEEDS to be applied. Let's face it, the MTPA wants to put forward our local tourist industry paralleled with Mauritius being a fashion destination and implementing FNO (which is scheduled this year for 6th September internationally) would fulfill the MTPA's wants and boost economy at the same time, just as the 24/7 Project did. You might say it's just the same thing, but you've missed out one important fact! The Fashion's Night Out brand-name sells! Indeed, if Mauritius aims at offering the island as a fashion/touristic destination, then joining the countries listed to celebrate FNO this year would propell Mauritius on the international chessboard as a fashion destination while allowing Mauritian economy along with Small and Medium Enterprises flourish! So, let's join hands and claim for the FNO to be implemented so that we, like the rest of the industrialized world, can celebrate fashion with a big F!
