Weeks after HSC results hit Mauritian homes, ex-students are now at facing one of the most important times in their lives - choosing a career; a choice which could very well be the start of troubles... Although Giovanna did mess up the final hours of the Malaysia Education Exhibition 2012 Fair at Mer Rouge, many ex-students did get time to visit and grab some valuable info about how to apply for foreign universities, about scholarships available, about cost and tuition fees and about degrees offered! Indeed, in today's world, the act of choosing is getting more and more difficult because of the wideness of options made available by universities : ranging from Fashion Journalism to Midwifery to Actuarial Sciences, the amount of degrees worldwide is astounding! Yet, Mauritians tend to follow the trend and set their minds on pursuing accountancy, medicine, quantity surveying or Business Finance. But do you guys really know what the day of an accountant, of a doctor, a dentist, a quantity surveyor or a business admin is ? Before going for mainstream degrees to please your family or simply because you don't know what else to do, take some time off for yourself. Take time to reflect on life, on your dream life, on your future. Trust me, you haven't worked so hard for so long to mess it all up with one wrong decision now! Take time to analyse all variables, apply as soon as you can, ask for advice from genuine sources and THINK! If you are still a little lost, then you might find some help from Mauritius Job Prospects section on the Government website (so I was told!). Yet, finding that page on the super NOT user-friendly website which has tons of hidden pages which keep leading you to somewhere else until you finally end up downloading some Excel sheet! Well, in any case, my point is, if you are still doubting whether you should go for Finance, Media or Sciences, do scrutinize the future work sector landscape of Mauritius. Even if you plan on working abroad (hard in these difficult economic times but not impossible!), you still need to start working in the island before all your procedures go through and we all know of the Mauritian administrative slowness! Let's not reproduce the same pattern Generation X did! Come on Generation Y, time to start thinking differently. What will happen if we all do ACCA or QS or Medicine ? Well, 10 job-seekers will be postulating for a single job (and I'm light on the figures here). In fact, that's basically what is already happening across the island! For Mauritius to advance both culturally, socially and economically, we need professionals at all levels! We need qualified journalists, qualified bakers, engineers, social workers, consultants in politics, foreign/international relations, interior decorators, fashion designers, radio personnel and so many more! Let's take our future in hands and make our dreams come true! Time to think for ourselves people! You dream about a career as book editor? Writer? Ballet dancer? Performing artist? Journalist? Entrepreneur? Farmer? You can chose to be whoever you want - the choice is yours. You can make money in any field provided you excel at it. P.S. Times are rough so make the right decision. Share your dream career and let's keep our fingers crossed! Sine Cera

Good thoughts! But do you really think that in a country like Mauritius, we are free to do whatever we want? I wanted to be a Biomedical Scientist but unfortunately I figure out how mediocre the salary of a Scientist is in Mauritius (compared to other countries), moreover there is NO career prospects here in our island. I am a Science-lover and my place is surely not in Mauritius, however I can't risk my career by choosing a subject which will lead me to being jobless, nor do I have the means to go abroad and to work there. So, I am helpless. If I were interested in Business and Finance, it would have lead me to a fruitful career in Mauritius.

Well, this is what is actually happening. Many of us get confused as whether to choose X or Y because of such and such reason. I am in no better position, trust me. What i can tell you is that : think of your dream life. Would a job that pays better yet where you don't find motivation be a good option instead of choosing a job you love everything about that pays reasonably ? If you excel at something, the rewards will come in many forms, maybe not in terms of salary but Awards of some sort. You might even get to be appointed as Lecturer, who knows ? If Science is your passion, you will succeed whichever road you go that way. I hope this helps. Stay tuned!

Yeah, I love Science and initially I loved Biology, well I still love it. To study what I like and what I really love is no problem, but when getting out of my dream, I see the real world. I've seen people struggling to make their dream a success but at the end they forgo. The problem is not about the salary nor about getting more money, the real problem is that you are not recognized for what you are doing. Really, a biomedical Scientist in the UK is completely different from a biomedical Scientist from Mauritius. It would be a shame for me to hold a degree in Biomedical Science and to do a work which is not at all relevant to it; that's why ,we, scientists are not well paid, and rarely recognized. Well, frankly, Mauritius is not a country for Science-lover. Leave a Reply. |
