This week - axed on Students&Schools - continues with a review of the percentage scheme MES provides us with. Is it really worth it ? Is it a good classifying system ? Loretto Convent Curepipe -property of Isla-Mauricia Once again, Hindu Girls' College is in the limelight but with diametrically opposing reasons.... but let's keep that for later. After a quick review of the statistics published online by the MES, available HERE, it was pretty clear that the 13 colleges - previously grouped under the 100% pass rate - do not stand on equal pedestals and it's a shame no one said anything about this discrepancy! Indeed, with an astounding 212 candidates passing from HGC, it is without a doubt that this school is THE leading one among the 12 others, out of which, even RCC and QEC did not send more than 141 and 154 candidates respectively. Should there have been a quantitative list, HGC would top with 212, followed by Sodnac SSS (160) on the second position. Then, QEC (154) and equal on the fourth place would be RCC and DMC with 141 candidates each...down the list, R Seeneevassen and S.A.R. Mohamed SSS would be equal runner-ups with 36 candidates each and lastly, Islamic Cultural College P Louis would close that 13-college list with 5 - yes 5! - candidates! How can HGC and ICCPL be both in the same band? Even through this percentage scheme might group them together, but qualitatively, they are worlds apart! Moreover, logic would lead us to believe that schools namely LCC (picture), Collège du Saint Esprit and St Joseph's College with 106, 159 and 102 candidates respectively did much better than some schools with 100% pass rate! This Students&Schools week is about to take another turn with the upcoming HSC results, scheduled for distribution on Monday 6th February! Meanwhile, let's not take facts for granted and think outside the box!
Let me know what you think. Sine Cera

HGC did a remarkable job and has certainly emerged today as an elite school(HGC has left behind even RCC and QEC)...indeed we can not assess HGC sending more than 200 sc candidates and ICCPL sending 5 sc candidates on the same level and awarding both school a 100% success. It is obvious that if a school is sending 5 students all of them will pass and it can also be possible that the latter is playing a safe game by sending 5 "brilliant" students or at least students who will be successful in exams.I think this was very wrong and this system needs to be amended: MES should put a range of the minimum number of students a school should sent for sc exams while the maximum is not an issue. I'm not pin pointing the ICCPL but its just that its a good example to show the difference between the quality of results and most importantly quantity. Thats my view, its not necessary everyone will agree with me.Congratulations to HGC once again!

Hi! Thank you for this comment, I like the way you play safe :P Amending the system will take time. And i do not think MES wants to invest more time into more detailed stats. I mean, a simple frequency curve would be enough for us to retrieve enough information such as the mode, etc. Stay tuned!

Indeed it will take some time, but this has to be changed; it cannot go on like that in an era where competition is present at every level.when i read about it in the newspapers i was shocked-to some extent its not fair for those schools which have strived to really achieve where they stand today..i think the idea of a frequency curve is appropriate, allowing us to have an overview of how things really are. i'm nobody in this big "business"(not the appropriate word to use),i can't do anything other than hoping that the MES will bring about more effective strategies...

Quality is more conspicuous that quantity. And the fact is that, H.G.C cannot compete with other schools! Their system of providing education to the students has sadly collapsed! HGC FAIL. P.S: I come from HGC.
