Model of extension to SSR Airport - Google As recent visit to the airport of Mauritius has made me realize two things - first, my friends are all flying away for tertiary studies and second, that something big might be on its way to Mauritius. The massive construction going on at the airport right now - I feel awkward not having taken a picture of the gigantic metallic skeleton but anyway, I'm sure those of you who visited the SSR Airport recently know what I'm talking about - and the extensive improvement of our road network have been media feasts for months; criticized by some and acclaimed by others, the national upgrade the country it witnessing seem to be contradictory with the reality of figures. Ring Road - Google Yes, there has been a decrease in tourist arrivals (I don't have the figures right now, but we sure as hell know it is the case) and so much so that a flight was cancelled due to lack of passengers. This caused a whole hassle for other passengers who were forced to take new flights. The point is that this clearly shows that tourist arrival is in no big shape right now. Yet, the airport is being upgraded, and BOY this is an upgrade! The road network is facing its fair share of a lifting as well. And what about commercial centers? Light Railway Transit - Google Well, long gone is the time when Ebene was making waves about the buildings mushrooming everywhere; now, malls are on the front seat! They are mushrooming all across the island: Bagatelle takes over the heart of the island, Cascavelle Mall has the west part, La Croisette Grand Baie will grab the northern touristy part while I heard even Flacq has new plans for mall development over there as well. Yet, times have never been harder and Phoenix Les Halles proved it. The IT shopping location closed doors (dropped the shutters rather) few years after its grand opening and things were actually cheaper there, compared to Bagatelle shops. So, people can't afford much, we build shopping malls; tourists show less interest in travelling to us, we invest massively and upgrade our airport! Even better, I just heard on the radio (sorry, but I forgot the station) that there were talks of a railway system and that a Singaporean team was reaching soon for some feasibility planing. Does this ring any bell to you? To me, this sounds like something's coming... Indeed, we are acquiring new infrastructure - better road network, bigger airport, more malls with international brands (clearly out of reach of the average Mauritian) - and no one is actually thinking about the big picture and asking WHY all of this at the same time? All for the love of Mauritians? All for US to use and abuse? Well, if it were a sci-fi movie, right now would be the time to freak out and scream "invasion"! I keep thinking about this and it still doesn't makes much sense. Does it to you? What do you think could be the reason behind all of this? Let me know by leaving comments! Sine Cera
