11 January 2012 described as a date to be remembered - but for good or bad reasons ? We have been watching yesterday's news bulletin and the introduction of Creole and Bhojpuri as optional subjects has, once again, made it for the "Dossier". With positive comments rocketing for here and there, few of us have been raising concerns... In any case, I see this new 'modification' to our Mauritian educational system as utterly meaningless (Oh, and please pardon my straightforwardness). In a fast globalizing world where the concept of Global Village spreading beyond national frontiers, English as a language is without the least a doubt dominating the international chessboard. Even French, the beautiful language of love, is adopting English words via an over-exposed young generation to the media of the West; through films, music, food culture, social networks, et cetera! That being said, it seems evident to me that English will overshadow any other language within the century and I'm wondering what learning Creole or Bhojpuri -although with it's load of potential (note the sarcasm!) - would lead us to? Of course, we all know how the mother tongue is extremely useful as a teaching aid and blah blah...but was there the need to introduce these spoken languages as separate subjects? Learning through our mother tongue will definitely help the youngsters absorb concepts and theories more easily but what will learning Creole or Bhojpuri do really? Will they be easing it in their workplace? Will they use Bhojpuri to talk among their peers? Will they, as businessmen/women use them to to presentations to foreign investors? Will a fully-revised grammatically up-to-date Creole with a dictionary change anything in our local adverts? NO, NO,, NO and NO! Has money been spent on setting up a dictionary for Creole? Has money been spent to set up new books? Has money been spent on the whole preparation process from Day 1? Yes, Yes and Yes!
So, dear readers, am I wrong to think that this 'reform' in our education will lead us to nowhere? Allowing the use of Creole or Bhojpuri as a teaching medium would have been enough to give a push to the children's learning. Good intention, wrong decision... Let me know what you think by leaving comments. Sine Cera
