"Ma passion est le maquillage depuis tres jeune, mais je fais cela 'professionellement' depuis l'age de 13 ans," confides the young man... As the Bagatelle Fashion Week climaxes this weekend (it's probably going to be an aborted climax but the formula has a nice ring to it!), it's time for a top-notch Fashion Update! Master of his art, the leading make-up artist Cedric Lanappe opens to MODE-K for a very intimate interview! The 18 year old, who will be turning 19 in two days, studies Marketing at the Charles Telfair Institute and has already completed his first semester! The young make-up prodigy has not wasted a single day, for he has, indeed, started his degree right after his HSC results in February, earlier this year. From personal anecdotes to make-up tips and trends, discover the leading make-up artist, a true artist: Cedric Lanappe! Q: You are one of the leading, if not THE leading, make-up artist on the island. Can you explain this sudden propulsion into national recognition? A: Above all, it's been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Since childhood, I loved everything that had to do with colors and art. I simply tried and people liked my work. At first, I thought of doing make-up for fun without any real interest, but, in the end, people started recognizing my work and I grew fond of it all. Since then, I keep updating my techniques and style, tapping inspiration from fashion blogs and VOGUE. So I guess this is it. It just happened. Q: If I may ask, what's your secret make-up blog inspiration then ? A: I truly admire Tali Joy Castellano. I followed her and her works until she passed away, but she was a true source of inspiration. As for my online treasures, the top site would be BEHANCE, but Pinterest isn't far behind. Q: Has it been difficult though for you to make your way into this world of 'minceur' and appearances and because of your body morphology and sex? A: (He takes it lightly and lets out a faint laughter) Well, for starters, it's important to say that my weight has never been an issue. I made myself a name and am respected, even though I am a boy, very young - remember I started at 13 - and my body morphology isn't quite the norm in this glittering world. But I think that personality is crucial, especially in this industry. My weight has also not been an issue because, let's face it, I'm trying modelling! (and more giggles!) Q: You would agree that talent matters more than anything else then? A: Yes, along with the passion and dire want to succeed! Jasmina Ruben Photographed by Karen Pang Q: I don't think many know about ur past in the MUA field. Where did you get your training from ?A: Well, honestly, I never studied about make-up. No training whatsover. It will probably sound weird, but that's the truth. Everything around me inspires me - that's how I roll! Q: I guess that makes you some sort of make-up prodigy? A self-taught perhaps? A: (Laughs out loud) I wouldn't go that far! I hate self-proclamation. Q:You're 18, that's very young indeed! How are you coping with the studies in parallel? A: Well, I'm enrolled as a Part-time student at CTI, so I get to dedicate myself to my passion as well. This situation allows me to work during the day. So, it's all good for me. Q: Why Marketing then? A: Good question! Hmm...it's basically to allow me to later work for a cosmetics company abroad and to be able to promote their products and use them at the same time. Q: Where do you see yourself then? In a not-so-far future? A: Aha okay! I could see myself in Australia, or Paris and why not be crazy and dare to say NEW YORK! But like I said, I would never have thought that I would reach such acclamation in Mauritius, so I guess I can let myself dream a bit! Q:I read that you also want to eventually work with Kim Kardashian? Tell me more about that!? (Find the article from Le Mauricien HERE) A: (Laughs out loud-er) I tried stressing on the fact that I would like to work with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, given that they get their make-up done nearly every morning by professionals. Sophie Photographed by Khatleen Minerve Q: So, if I get it right, the glittering world attracts you? In both ways - make-up and stardom? A: Exact! I LOVE make-up and I do like the celebrities, at least, being able to do their make-up. Q: (I dare some edgy humor) Well, technically, you're sort of a celebrity as well, in the fashion field here? I'm pretty sure everyone knows who you are by now! A: (Laughs out much louder) Never! I'm recognized for my work. That's all. I wouldn't go as far as saying that I'm a celeb! Q: So, I heard the Pigmentation show was a success. Tell me why ? A: Haha, who told you that? Anyway, it was nice. I loved the whole thing. I got lucky enough that people were interested. I was borderline astounded by the number of people showing up! Moreover, I got support from Hennessy and from the best models of the island. Really, I loved it all! Q:I read it on Le Mauricien! Anyway, you brought up a nice point here: Connections. Don't you think knowing people in the industry boosted your MUA career? Without support and help from Henessy/models etc, I don't think this event would have even happened? A: True. I think that I proved my worth for the Hennessy management and the best of the modelling sphere to show their support and trust for this event. I'm also thinking about the photographers who helped showcasing my work in such an artistic manner. Honestly, that event was a success all thanks to them! I can't go without thanking my family as well. My mum and dad who also showed their support. And my older brother, who's always been motivating me! Q:I get that you did not have to pay anyone for the event? A: Well, I had sponsors for the event. It was a win-win for everyone, and my models have been generously spoiled! Q: I see that you're a pro! Morandini can interview you anytime! Let's move to colors then. Would you, color lover, share with us your wisdom. What colors should we wear this winter? A: Okay, well, personally, I think purple lipstick is THE lip trend right now. Le rouge a levres mauve est plus que le MUST! I think boldly colored lips should be encourage: purples, pinks and fuschias! Oh, and the bluish tons as well! Q: Okay, that's for make up! So, what's THE make-up MUST this winter? Cat eyes? Nude shades? A: Purple lips! A nude complexion (as in nude eyes, and well-applied mascara and PURPLE LIPS!) Q: Okay okay! Iget it, Purple all the way! Would you have a DIY make-up tip for the ladies out there reading? A: For lipstick to stay longer, apply a first layer, onto which you apply loose-power before applying a second layer of lipstick! Finish with a lip gloss and voila! (I had to ask about this method twice before understanding it. If you have questions, let us know in the comments below and we'll try to get back asap!) Q: Mot de la fin? A: I would like to urge the young Mauritians to understand that having ambition and being motivated is the key to success, no matter what others say. You can succeed. Liked his interview? Let us know in comments below! For more of his work, go to his Facebook Page and/or get your copy of People in Fashion (yes, he will obviously be appearing as MUA there!)!
