10 mm embryo at 5 weeks I do realize the timing is odd given it's Mother's Day, but I think it is high time for the youth to speak out about this very 'trendy' affair! We have read about what politicians have said, what countries have done and what related NGOs have worked for, but I think we have left out half of the world- the younger half! So, here I am, talking about abortion (I know you are probably fed up of hearing/reading this over and over) because I believe youngsters need not shun this universal debate. Should abortion be authorized, legalized? If yes, in when should it be legal and when not? Who should be responsible for taking this decision? The questions will keep coming our way, but lets stay realistic and approach this with as much pragmatism as possible... I am not going to beat about the bush - abortion needs to be allowed; legalized not only to protect the woman's life, as it is the case at present on the island, but also on request (whether it be due to physical, mental, fetal defects, rape and socioeconomic factors). Of course, anti-abortion groups will claim that "Every human has rights", yet, are fetuses humans? Here, I go to René Descartes for some enlightenment. He said "Cogito ergo sum" (translation: I think, therefore I am) and this should set up a whole wheel into motion. If fetuses can think (YES, think - I am not talking about cerebral activity which starts occurring in the third semester), then it can be treated as a human, if not, then it is only a fetus -that's precisely why there's a word for it! Research has shown that fetuses are not capable of feeling pain at the beginning of the fetal stage, and may not be able to feel pain until the third trimester (28th to 42nd week). Does this not negate the application of Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Of course, this would only be effective should fetuses be considered humans and it be confirmed that no pain can be felt until a specific point of gestation. Article 1 of the U.D.H.R. Have you thought about that? Article 12 states "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks." Does this not sound odd when someone tries taking the right to choose what's best for his/her family? Arbitrary interference certainly has "society telling one to do this or that" on their top list. Is pregnancy not private matter? Thus, how can society dictate a family's private life - it is their decision to take. They have their reasons, let them enjoy their being endowed with reason and conscience! Article 25 says "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control." Lets imagine a mother in the Democratic Republic of Congo, world's poorest country according to the 2012 publishing of the IMF, who is about to give birth. Will this baby, human being once born, enjoy a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, etc? Certainly not. Would you rather reduce world's exploding population AND save a human being from living in extreme poverty, thus allowing a breach of Article 25? Can you ensure this right be given to this baby - if you can, then vote against abortion. Otherwise, save the world from over population and this child from a life of misery, of disease, of poverty, of suffering, both psychological and physical. Article 29 stipulates "In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society." I would like to associate this Article with the fact that abortion or termination of gestation is allowed in case of multiple pregnancies (in cases of triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, etc) for the protection of the mother and/or rest of the fetuses. Here, the obvious perspective is that of benefiting the greater number - working for the common good. In this light of thought, why not save the world from overpopulation, from famine, from economic crises, from social disorder - scourges which arise when there is a surplus of births (of course, coupled with various other factors). Did you know : Abortion, when induced in the developed world in accordance with local law, is among the safest procedures in medicine. However, unsafe abortions (those performed by persons without proper training or outside of a medical environment) result in approximately 70 thousand maternal deaths and 5 million disabilities per year globally. So, let's be realistic and pragmatic. It's time to face facts. Otherwise, all these unwanted babies might turn into monsters! Okay, I might be pushing hard on this one but a clear illustration of this is the case of Eddy Orlofsky on Desperate Housewives Season 6! He does end up killing women because his mother simply did not want him as a child! Can you imagine a world filled with Eddys in every country - well, trust me, abortion would go legal across the globe! Let me know what you think by voting and leaving comments! P.S. For those who consider voting against the legalization of abortion, try going through Terri Schivao's case and think over the whole question of who gets to choose whether of not to terminate a pregnancy.
