If you haven't heard of her name just yet, you must certainly have seen her work on Facebook (if you haven't, here's to remedy this: LINK)! This is precisely why she is on MODE-K to talk about the Fashion Week. The more she shoots, the more important she continues to grow in the small strata of photography and fashion. Indeed, Khatleen Minerve is certainly one of the most talented young fashion photographers on the island, although she considers herself to be a portrait photographer. Freshly 22, she has recently completed her Law and Management Degree at the University of Mauritius. Currently working as a freelance photographer, she is also contributing to Le Défi Life magazine. "Photography is first and foremost my hobby and great love," she confides. Want to know more about her and her views about The Bagatelle Fashion Week? Read more! Q: So, how many issues of Le Défi Life have you worked on so far? A: Well, the second one is coming out this week. But I have already started on the third issue. So all in all, it makes three! Q: The Bagatelle Fashion Week. What are your views about this event? A: I have not read much about it, and seriously I do not care much about those events because firstly, all the time, there is such a "bad education" in Mauritius when it comes to fashion. Q: What do you mean by 'bad education' ? A: Most people even in the business, whatever their education/degree, know hardly any big names in the high fashion industry, except, maybe, for the recent generations. They might have heard of some but they do not understand the weight of the names and what they make exactly. So when it comes to organizing events such as this Fashion Week, people are just taking names like Fashion Week or Victoria's Secret to make the event sound like a big thing when it is nothing like a real Victoria's Secret show or a real Fashion Week. So it comes to a point where uneducated people (not versed in fashion) are unable to distinguish the high fashion week from the cheap fashion week appellation we are doing here. And by the way, the culture of copyright and names and law respect are not ingrained in the Mauritian minds as in France where a fake Louis Vuitton bag would generate jail time and mockery. We sell CK stuffs like peanuts on our streets. So for my first point, I think this ‘Fashion Week’ appellation is just wrong and misleading. The organizers have just found Fashion Week as a good simple title with a nice ring to it. They aren’t aiming at doing things properly to instruct people about fashion. Q: Still, if you watch the Mall of Mauritius promotional picture, you understand that the goal is promote the stores at the mall. A: If at least Fashion week at Bagatelle included our local designers, I would have been more tolerant, but even then it would not be nice. They should try to do things properly. I however do agree with their aim of promoting their shops. Q: It's a wrong appellation, I give you that. So, I get that you won’t be attending it? A: If there are sales I may find a few things but I'm not going to go just for the Fashion Week. I love fashion, sleep with high fashion images on my desk and desktop, but I can't afford big names and I really mean I cannot afford big names. I would prefer spending my money online on popular brands that offer affordable prices and good quality things. Q: Thank you for saying that! I was said to have 'cheap taste' after admitting to the same thing. But anyway, do you have a favorite shop at Bagatelle though? One you are looking forward to go through its new collection? A: Ah, I actually shop at Mango only and especially when there are sales. I mean really, pride is not an option. Sales are great, and I would be a dumb girl to go buy when it's so expensive. But then, I have got some great quality stuffs from online stores that have lasted through the years. And then really, who would wear big names here, nobody cares much about big names like LV or Marc Jacobs; they would not even know the difference between fake and real from afar. From time to time, you might want to buy a great quality big brand pair of shoe, or jacket, but it will be because you want to use it for a long time. Q: You're so right. I get then that you would go for Style rather than Fashion ? A: Style all the way! Q: Back to the Fashion Week. Is there anything positive you can think of which might come from this event? A: Well, I am not sure how it works or how it has been for the last past years, but I don't see any support from the government for the entrepreneurs, for those designers, who invest a lot in the creation of fashion - pret a porter or custom or high fashion. I don't see any support from the government, they are left on their own to struggle with the difficult times. Some have been closing shops in a few locations. Q: Well this is tricky area but I guess that would be your hope? Government support? A: My vision would be that the government should come together and support local designers to organize a show with all new collections being showcased at one go. It would just help them get exposure and sales. But the Fashion Week at bagatelle, je dis tant mieux pour eux, car certains magasins sont souvent tres vides en journee. If this event can make turn window-shoppers into actual shoppers, then even better. And it will be a good opportunity for the shops to get some exposure because some people barely know the names of the shops in Bagatelle, just the names of restaurants. Q: Now, your reservations? Do you really think it could work? As in bring in more clients? Boost winter sales? A: Well, they chose a bad time. Nearly end of the month. Who’s got money to spend when bills are coming in? But I think it might work if they offer good deals and present some new things. If it is the same normal sales, people won't follow for sure. Q: Okay, that's positive thinking! What about the fact that models will be wearing the latest collection all through Thursday to Sunday? A: Hahahaha (not sure how many ‘ha’s’ there were :P)! It’s going be hilarious honestly! Models mall walking! Q: Well, I’m guessing they would have some sort of runway walkway at some point. A: I have no idea. But Ii hope they are not going to wear tons of make-up. Mauritians are simple in their tastes mostly. And simple make up and styling does it to appeal to them. Make-up! It's finally been brought up; such a crucial aspect in the worlds of modelling and fashion. Perhaps the next intervention on MODE-K during this Bagatelle Fashion Week for another Fashion Update should be from a make-up artist. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below!
