MODE-K has exclusivity - one of the 2011 Laureates, winner of the MCB Foundation Scholarship opens up after HSC results last Monday! From Le Matinal. Hello readers! We all watched/read the list of Laureates either on TV or in the newspaper, and we all wonder - what did they do ? Will that happen to me ? Can I really do something about it ? Well, I hope you'll find some answers in this post! Meet Ashwin Rishi Thondee from Royal College Curepipe and winner of the MCB Foundation Scholarship, one awarded to the student ranked after the laureates in the Economics Side! Interview : Q: Ranked 3rd, first feelings ? A: Honestly, quite surpirsed, I thought I'd be ranked, but clearly laureate was not on my mind - you know, stiff competition. But it felt just great...huge relie Q: So, MCB Foundation Scholarship will open doors for you , probably more than to the other HSC laureates- what you think of this statement ? A: LOL. Let me think...well i think that mcb is as good as the other top state scholarships. Though indeed better than the additional ones which have a limit on tuition fees. The MCB covers the airfares, university fees, accommodation, books and education materials, transport and even trainee-ships at MCB. Q: Does this means your scholarship is limitless ? You can chose any university? A: Huh, lol. Well, I think the additional scholarships offer Rs600 000 per year. Q: Everyone wants to know- are you an RCC 'pursang' ? A: Ha. Nopes. I come frm St Joseph's College. Q: Oh, so you moved from the Saints to the Royalists. Jokes apart, do you think you would have ranked 3rd if you hadn't moved? A: No. Q: Why? What is different in RCC? A: Trust me, SJC is good, but this extra competition pushes you to work harder, it motivates you..."ena ene competition saine" and in fact,. in my class, we were only 10 and we worked together. In the end, we all managed to be in the Top 15! Q: Moving on, you plan on coming back ? A: Yes, my family lives here. It's where I belong. Q: Very noble answer. So, were you ranked for SC ? A. No, in fact I didnt even get 6units nor 7, but 8! Q: Final question - what is your revision mantra? A: Continuous work always pays! While Ashwin says there was a healthy competition in HIS classroom, other RCC students admit the contrary. Indeed, student X says that in his class, one would rather not ask a question for fear others might mock him or should others get the answer as well. While Ashwin is at his first attempt at HSC Examinations, we are surprised to see that this year, there is only one third-year student laureate from RCC. I think this is a subtle way of showing that doing a third year does not always pay well - and it clearly does not guarantee a seat as Laureate! I am definitely against this trend among bright students who sit again for exams in hopes of being ranked 1st or 2nd! Of course, there is nothing much I can do about it, and on second thought, it's totally understandable that in such a competitive and expensive world,no one is ready to give up any chance of being granted scholarships...the only way out of island!
Ashwin stands as a perfect example that hard and continuous work always pays! Indeed, with not 6 units, not 7units, but 8 units, he came to work his way out of the bunch and be ranked 3rd in Mauritius. Sometimes, changing schools is a decision which can indeed MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. But, let's face it, moving from a Private Church-ruled school to Royal College can be a touch transition. Of course, I am far from supporting this "migration" as I like to call it, and Yogesh Jagessur (Adolphe de Plevitz SSS) and Sandrine Fat (Ebène SSS) are perfect example that once you set your mind to something, you can get it, provided you work for it! P.S. Well, I hope you find this little interview interesting. Let me know what you think? Should I pursue with more 'confessions' this week from other laureates? You can even suggest who to interview! Sine Cera

First of all, congratulations to Ashwin!!! It is obvious (when analysing the GIRLS SIDE) that leaving for STAR COLLEGES (yes, we Mauritius are obssessed with QEC RCC etc) after SC does not guarantee success!!! Indeed, i'm EXTREMELY happy that the SSR scholarship did not go to QEC but to LCQB!!!!!!!

Congrats to Ashwin. I believe he definitely toiled hard and since i often discussed with him and other Rcc students i would agree that going to a star college, meeting new students who offer tough competition and joining in that spirit of inter-college competition plays a major role in motivating students to become a laureate. The only thing i find regretful is that such colleges lay too much emphasis on the academic part of it. And i am sure even Ashwin and you Kelvin would agree with me. But well, this laureate has known both types of institutions and this makes him a deserving scholarship-winner :)

thank you my friend :) definitely i agree with rushil..going to a star college and this extra competition do actually help.however ,my former school also deserves some credit, because 5 yrs are determinant in a student's career at school..Also its true much emphasis is on the academic part, but i guess its how its always been...and since success is always comin,it aint gonna change soon..

Because QEC cannot always win. (: However next year, we expect all the 14 laureates there. The 2012 batch is a really really good one.
