Hey readers! With Valentine's Day looming in - can you believe it is already Friday 13th and I still haven't got myself a Valentine! - I thought it would be better to post tonight that the usual #SundaySpecial. The Valentine Gentleman is my take on how to dress up for the big night, this over-commercialized time of the year which quantifies the un-quantifiable: LOVE. But even though we don't all buy into this concept, it is still a norm in contemporary societies to express one's love - lets put it that way - in a louder fashion than on any other day. So we buy flowers, chocolates, cute little cards, jewellery even for some, and we ultimately dress up for romantic candle-light dinners - which many of you have already planned by now, or so I hope! If you were looking for inspiration as to what to wear, here's The Valentine Gentleman. And if you believe in the adage that a dog is a man's best friend, the White Dress Shirt is the stylish man's best friend. Not any white shirt, that White Dress Shirt. I usually go for Royal Oxford fabric even though it's actually quite thick for summer - but it'll still work just fine at night though, when the temperature falls back a bit. The White Dress Shirt is certainly not only about fabric, but also about cut. I will seem to be repeating myself , but getting the right cut for your body type is crucial. Oxford fabric, quite think and solid standing on the upper body, is very flattering to the slim/slender young man - when it is cut to suit the body measurements of course. At this point, it's important to mention that I get all of my dress shirts tailor made and there's a reason for that. A reason which I believe will apply to you too. WE AIN'T GREEK GODS! Yes, we come in all shapes and sizes, and certainly don't match the pre-defined sizes of ready-made garment. This means that your arm length, shoulder width/shoulder line, neck size, and chest will not match the measurements of the ready-made shirt, which seems to be cut according to a very surreal idealistic notion of the male body. The White Dress Shirt is highly versatile and the bonus point is that it suits every skin complexion! Get it in Royal Oxford or any other such woven fabric to allow for even more versatility - it'll be paired nicely with casual and formal pants. As you will notice, I paired the shirt with rather casual Military chinos and picked my ASOS Trench Coat as OW, only to add a bit of layer and substance to the look. The whole ensemble then blends formal and casual to create a semi-formal look perfect for a dinner date. Too formal for your plans? Then roll the hems of the chinos up, ditch the socks (or pick loafer socks!) and show some skin - that'll drop your look down a notch. I also applied the 3-Colour Rule: Military, Grey, and Camel-ish Brown. Remember, White doesn't count for the Colour Rule. Of course, colours are a matter of personal tastes and I prefer earthly shades and that's why I picked these colours to create my look. As long as you stick with the 3-Colour Rule and that these 3 colours are in harmony, your ensemble for a night out will work just fine! Even though Colour Blocking (from The Mall Walker, remember?) is perfectly in order with bold, and at times contrasting, colours, this style works only for daytime outfits. Last piece of advice: I tend to always wear a belt when I tuck my shirts in, but sadly, my new belt hadn't arrived yet in time for the photo shoot. It took me some time to find the right shade of grey (even had to go through all 50 Shades of Grey :P) to match my Mark Nason pair. I do love that pair of shoes but when it comes to pairing them with a belt, I literally almost gave up. But good news, I found that one perfect belt! Wanna take a look? Here's my Jack Wills Gosford Plaited Belt.
So this is it for tonight readers! I hope this Special Valentine's Day edition! Wishing you all the very best for tomorrow and lots of love to come your way! For those singles out there, don't you worry. Dressing up is not only for others' eye - style yourself up and instagram it! Until next week, SC Kelvin
