Hey readers! Winter is only, officially, a few days away (around mid-May, not sure about the exact date this year) and I just realised that I had never posted my #ResortRetreat yet! So before Summer 2015 is over, and before it's too late to run away from our hectic lives into cosy summery little havens, here's my take on the basics of looking good while you're on vacation, tanning by your hotel pool... Many of you will be starting exams in a bit - for unlucky others, you are sadly already in the midst of these stressful times and I apologies already for the torture of a read this is probably going to be to you - and there is nothing more soothing than a day out at the beach, free from the revision schedules and from the stress of impending examinations. It's warm, it's easy, it's chill. It's PER-FECT. But if the seaside calls for no fancy get-up, spending the weekend at a resort certainly demands a certain type of clothes if you want to look decent: the Resort Gear! If resorts remind you of 'comfy-ness' in every sense of the word, then your packing much reflect such an inviting, soft to the touch, easy on the eyes. Of course, I am talking about light cotton. Daywear, Night wear - cotton everywhere. So as you may have noticed, I picked my ASOS Pink Tank Top, ASOS Turquois Polo Shirt and ASOS Deep-V Neck T-shirt to be coupled with my white pair of Shortie Chinos from Mr Price. I completed my daytime outfits with leather sandals which is to me the perfect footwear since it can transition from 'poolside chill' to 'resort appropriate' as you wander around through the lobby, the winding alleys back to your room, onto the grass or the sandy shore. My resort péché mignon is dinner time. It's not only about the food (although it's probably a major contributing factor), but about the whole experience of enjoying new tastes in good company. It's like going to a new restaurant every night - and for a food aficionado like me, dinner time is MY time! Another aspect of dinner time is, of course, dressing up for dinner time. Now, I've seen a lot of rather formal outfits on my fellow resort-goers, in the likes of formal dark shirts, sleek dress pants. Although I wouldn't mind dressing up for a romantic dinner date at some fancy restaurant, and although Paradise Cove was a hell of a fancy location, having dinner at a resort still has to be in line with hotel mood motto: comfy-ness. What I picked are my ASOS Khaki Chinos and white slim pants as 'bottom' options as well as my favourite Polo Shirts as 'top' options. I would recommend contrasting the light pants with darker, more solid colours for the top - solid military green as my ESPRIT Polo Shirt and strong ochre as my ASOS Polka Dot Polo Shirt. I would still avoid black, which, to me, contrasts too sharply with the resort feel. Talking here about colours, I think it's important to note that anything sparkly, any heavy pattern that will strain the eye is to be avoided. Resorts are meant for rest and plenitude. Go for soft fabrics and for light pastels, shades of white, cream, beige, khaki. Of course, daywear can be more colourful - I really let myself go all out on bright pink and red! With the sun out and the pool only a few minutes' walk away, you're not going to be wearing these colours for too long anyway! Back to my nightwear, I also got my derby shoes which served as the perfect style addition while dressing me up, only a notch up. Dressing comfy but dressing decent as well. No sandals for dinner! As for accessories, keep is simple. Your watch is fine. Your ring is just enough. I think I've covered the basics of packing for a resort retreat. I'll leave you to deciding what to wear - or not- come bed time! Oh, and if you're looking for a weekend get-away, do check out Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel. I absolutely loved it! Not only was it a great location, with exceptionally great cuisine, but the service was also incredible. I've saved you snippets of my short stay there! For more, check my Instagram! Wishing you all a very stylish end-of-summer and hopefully a relaxing day or two away before having to face this year's 7 more months!
Until next time... SC Kelvin
